Yes, you can play a Wizard of Oz slot free: Light & Wonder’s own catalogue page for The Wizard of Oz Emerald City has a Play Demo button that opens the maker’s demo build after an 18+ age check, on desktop or mobile. Zynga’s Wizard of Oz Slots app is free as well, but it is a separate social game with its own machines and no cash prizes. This page compares the free routes, shows how to open the official demo, and explains what a free session can and cannot tell you.
Four ways to “play free”, compared
| Route | Real casino maths? | Money involved | Download | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light & Wonder catalogue demo | Maker’s demo build of the casino game | None; play credits only | No, browser | No progress saved; short sessions |
| Licensed casino demo mode | Same game as the casino’s real-money version | None | No | Account and age check often required; only where the casino is licensed |
| Zynga Wizard of Oz Slots app | No, machines built for the app | Optional coin purchases; no payouts | Yes, App Store or Google Play | Nothing can be cashed out |
| Casino free spins or no-deposit offer | Yes, the real game | Wins become bonus money with wagering | No | Only at a casino that carries the game; terms apply |
Only the first two show you the real game without any money at stake. The app is entertainment in its own right, and the last option is a bonus, not free play; it is covered on our Wizard of Oz bonus page.
Opening the official demo, step by step
- Go to Light & Wonder’s iGaming catalogue and open the page for The Wizard of Oz Emerald City (game ID 500148).
- Confirm you are 18 or older when the age pop-up appears; the site will not show content otherwise.
- Click “Play Demo”, then choose “Play on Desktop” or “Play on Mobile”.
- The game loads from Light & Wonder’s NYX game servers in demo mode, with a balance of play credits.
- Set lines and stake as you would for real, and spin. Feature screens, Glinda’s wild reels and the Oz Pick all appear as they do in the casino version.
The same catalogue offers demo buttons for Wizard of Oz Ruby Slippers DUAL and for The Wizard of Oz tumbler game, a match-style instant game. We found no demo button on the page for the instant-win We’re Not in Kansas Anymore. Over the Rainbow, the 2025 BetMGM exclusive, has no public demo page in the catalogue that we could find.
Light & Wonder’s site is a trade catalogue for casino operators, so it is plain: no tutorials, no paytable notes, and a “Got a question? Please contact your content specialist” box aimed at business customers. The demo itself is the useful part. For a walkthrough of each control, keep our step-by-step rules page open in another tab.
Zynga’s Wizard of Oz Slots app
This is the game most people find first when they search for free Wizard of Oz slots. It is published by Zynga, now part of Take-Two Interactive, under a Warner Bros. licence, and it has been on the App Store and Google Play since 2014. Google Play shows it with more than 10 million downloads, in-app purchases and ads, and an update on 23 September 2026.
Three points from Zynga’s own pages are worth knowing before you install it:
- No cash, ever. The store listing says the game “does not offer real money gambling or an opportunity to win real money or prizes”, and that practice or success at social gaming does not imply future success at real money gambling.
- Free credits on a timer. Zynga’s game page offers a free credit gift that can be claimed once every 24 hours.
- Paid coins. Purchases are optional but encouraged; Zynga’s web store promises 10% more credits than buying inside the game. Spending here is spending on entertainment with no return.
The app tells the film’s story through a series of machines you unlock as you level up, each built around a chapter of the movie. Those machines are designed for the app, so their features, pacing and payout behaviour tell you nothing about the casino version’s 95.95% RTP. Treat it as a separate game that happens to share the theme.
Inside the app: how Zynga’s coin economy works
Zynga’s help centre for the game explains its systems in plain terms, and they show how far the app has moved from a casino slot. A few examples from those help articles:
- Free spins vary by machine. Zynga says players can win free spins but that they behave differently in each machine; the pay table of each machine explains its version.
- Gifts have a daily cap. Players can collect a set number of gifts in every 24-hour period, and the cap depends on VIP tier.
- Balances stay on one device. The coin balance does not sync across devices; Zynga describes this as a design choice.
- Win labels are cosmetic. A “Big Win” in the app means winnings of 8 to 15 times the bet, per the help centre. The label describes the size of a single result, not a better chance of the next one.
- More currencies and events. Gems, a Prestige rewards programme, Clubs, leaderboards and multi-day events such as Emerald City Empire sit on top of the machines. One event, Jackpot Days, is entered by buying eligible credit packages.
None of this exists in the casino version. That is the main reason we keep the two apart on this site: habits formed in a game built around levels, events and purchases do not carry over to a real-money slot with a fixed RTP.
A 20-minute demo plan
Free play is most useful with a purpose. Here is a short routine that makes the official demo worth the time:
- Minutes 1 to 5: controls. Change the lines from 30 to 10 and back, then move the stake per line up two steps and down again. Watch how the total per spin changes and where the game displays it.
- Minutes 5 to 12: pacing. Run 100 spins at the lowest total stake. Note how many minutes it took. That number turns a budget into a time estimate later: 100 spins at 0.40 is 40 staked in however long your run took.
- Minutes 12 to 17: features. Keep spinning until you see Glinda or the Oz Pick, then read each feature screen properly instead of clicking through.
- Minutes 17 to 20: paytable. Open the paytable at two different stakes and compare how the awards scale.
Write down the starting and closing play balance as well, purely to see how far a short session swings. Then ignore the result: it is noise, as the next section explains.
Free play on phones and tablets
The maker’s demo has a separate mobile entry point, so the same five-reel game loads in a phone browser without an app. Expect a cropped control bar: stake and lines sit behind a single button, and the paytable behind the menu icon. Landscape mode gives larger reels on most phones. The demo streams from Light & Wonder’s servers, so it needs a stable connection; a dropped connection simply ends the session, since there is no money to recover.
The Zynga app behaves like any other mobile game: a download of its own, push notifications, and a balance stored on that device. If you mainly want to know how the casino game looks on a phone, the browser demo is the closer match.
Free play at licensed casinos
Regulated casinos that carry the official games often have a demo mode in the lobby. In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission has required operators since 7 May 2019 to verify a customer’s age before giving access to free-to-play versions of their games, so UK sites usually show demos only after sign-up and checks. In US states with legal online casinos, demo availability is the operator’s choice.
We do not link to or recommend operators in those markets. For players elsewhere, the catalogue demo above is the only official free version we could confirm, because no crypto casino we checked carried an official Light & Wonder Oz title; the details are on our casino availability page.
What a free session tells you, and what it does not
Worth learning in demo mode
- How the bet controls work: lines, stake per line and the total per spin.
- What each feature looks like: the Glinda reels, the Winged Monkeys free spins and the Road to Emerald City picks.
- How fast the game plays with autoplay on, which helps when setting a time limit.
- Whether you enjoy it. A game you find dull at zero cost will not improve with real money.
Not something a demo can show
A demo balance cannot confirm the RTP or “test a strategy”. Slots return their percentage over an enormous number of spins, and short sessions swing widely around it. As an illustration, imagine two demo runs of 300 spins at 0.30: one ends at 112 credits returned from 90 staked, the other at 61. Neither result says anything about the game, and neither will repeat. The RTP and the reasons no system beats it are set out on our odds page.
Play credits also change behaviour. Big imaginary stakes feel harmless, and a lucky demo run can build false confidence. If you move to real money, start from the budget you would be comfortable losing, not from what the demo balance suggested.
Demo play and real play side by side
| Aspect | Official demo | Real-money game at a licensed casino |
|---|---|---|
| Balance | Play credits, reset on reload | Your deposit, withdrawable |
| Age and identity checks | 18+ confirmation on the catalogue page | Full checks before deposit, as the licence requires |
| Limits and time-outs | None | Deposit, loss and session tools from the casino |
| Bonus terms | Not applicable | Wagering and max-bet rules if you take an offer |
| Bet range | Demo build defaults | The casino’s own steps within the maker’s 0.35 to 700 range |
The last row is easy to miss. A demo might start at a stake your casino does not offer, so check the real lobby’s lowest step before planning a budget around a demo session.
Other free Oz games from the same licences
Zynga also lists Wizard of Oz Magic Match, a puzzle game it launched worldwide in May 2016; it is a match-3 game, not a slot, and has no casino link. On the casino side, Light & Wonder’s catalogue demos include The Wizard of Oz tumbler, a match-style instant game with a yellow brick road bonus and free games, listed at 87% RTP. Trying it free shows how different an instant game feels from the reel slot, and why its lower return matters if you ever play it for money.
Free play versus bonus spins
Old pages on this site mixed up demo play and casino offers. They are different things. Demo credits have no value and no terms. Bonus spins from a casino are real spins whose winnings usually arrive as bonus money that must be wagered before withdrawal, and they only work on games the casino names in the offer. A spin offer at a casino that does not carry the Wizard of Oz slot cannot be used on it at all.
Lookalike “free Wizard of Oz” games
Search results for free Oz slots also turn up games from other studios with similar names. They may be fun, but they are different products with their own maths. The licensed titles carry the notice “THE WIZARD OF OZ and all related characters and elements © & ™ Turner Entertainment Co.” and name Light & Wonder, WMS or NYX as the provider. If a free game shows neither, it is not the slot described on this site.
Before moving from free to real money
Ask three questions. Is the game legally offered where you live? Does the casino hold a licence you can check? Have you set a deposit and loss limit? If any answer is no, stay with the demo. Real-money play is for adults only, and our responsible gambling page lists free help, including Gamblers Anonymous and Gambling Therapy.
Free play questions
Where can I play the Wizard of Oz slot for free?
The cleanest option is the Play Demo button on Light & Wonder’s own catalogue page for The Wizard of Oz Emerald City, which opens the maker’s demo build after an 18+ age check. Zynga’s Wizard of Oz Slots app is also free, but its machines are built for that app rather than copied from the casino game.
Is the Wizard of Oz demo the same as the real game?
The maker’s demo shows the same layout, controls and bonus screens as the casino version, and the play money is clearly marked. What a demo cannot do is prove the RTP: a few hundred spins are far too few for the result to settle near the long-run percentage.
Can you win real money in Wizard of Oz Slots by Zynga?
No. Zynga’s Google Play listing says the game does not offer real money gambling or an opportunity to win real money or prizes. Coins can be bought with real money but never cashed out.
Do I need to download anything to try Wizard of Oz free?
Not for the maker’s demo, which runs in a desktop or mobile browser. Only the Zynga social app needs a download, from the App Store or Google Play.
Why do UK casinos ask for ID before free play?
Since May 2019 the UK Gambling Commission has required licensed operators to verify a customer’s age before letting them play free-to-play versions of gambling games. That is why UK sites hide demos until the account is checked.
Is there a Wizard of Oz no deposit bonus?
We know of no current no-deposit offer tied to an official Wizard of Oz slot at a crypto casino, because we could not verify any crypto casino that carries the game. Offers at licensed casinos come with their own terms; see our bonus page for how they work.
